Recently we were at a meeting with professionals who coach patients. We were discussing the bad adherence to medical therapies. Suddenly one says: “Unfortunately we don’t know much about the reasons why patients have a bad adherence. Not much research is being done.”
Huh? Not much research being done? What about the classic manual of the WHO?
Yes, we know, this report dates already from 2003. But personally we are convinced that the basic ideas are still useful.
For some major diseases this report collected the results of the main studies on compliance (already available in 2003). So, you want to know why patients with asthma, cancer, HIV, diabetes, hypertension of depression have a bad adherence? Just start reading ‘Adherence to long-term therapies: evidence for action’. Indeed: “RTFM, Read the f**king Manual”!
